Tunisia is a country located in North Africa. It shares borders with Libya in the south and Algeria in the west. North and east is washed by the Mediterranean Sea. The country occupies an area of 163,610 square kilometers. Tunisia also includes the Djerba and Kerkennah Islands in the Gulf of Gabes. Tunisia is divided into four topographical regions. In the north, the country is crossed by the low Atlas Mountains with a height ranging from 610 to 1520 m. The only major river of the country, Medjerda, flows through the region from west to east and ends into the Gulf of Tunis. Southward from the mountains is the Plateau with an average height of about 610 m. Further to the south, are the salty lakes, known as shatt or chott. Some of theses lakes are below sea level. In the very south lies the Sahara, occupying about 40% of the Tunisian territory.
TUNIS is the smallest and most populated of the twenty-four provinces of Tunisia. The city of Tunis is the capital and seat of Tunisia's national government. The city is separated from the Gulf of Tunis by the Lake of Tunis, a natural lagoon, and is connected to the Tunisian port of La Goulette by a canal. Tunis encompasses an area of 212.63 square km and had a population of 1,056,247 in 2014. The city experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate.
MEDINA The Medina of Tunis is famous for its unique interaction between socio-cultural activities, architecture, economics, and urban life of the ancient human settlements within the Maghreb in 698 AD. It is for this reason that the Medina of Tunis was inscribed as one of Tunisia's UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1979. This historic Medina contains 700 monuments including mosques, madrasas, palaces, mausoleums, and fountains. Examples of these monuments are the noble houses of Dar Lasram and Dar Hussein, the El Attarine military barracks, and the mosques of Zitouna and Kasbah.
